My wife has MS and has been living with it for 5 years. The emotional part takes a toll on her more then the everyday glitches, or (short circuts) . We have been having problems and was wondering if there are centers like the ones they have for cancer patients? We see several different Doctors all very good Doc's from family doc to pain to Neur. to phys. Even though I'm not a Doctor I think she needs to be weened off some meds and maybe put on different things , because they all say your body will get used to the same meds and it won't be as effective. I personal think that it would be great for her to be somewhere with others in the same situation and everyone be under one roof , and not travel for place to place for all these diff. Doc's ....... Any help would be great Thanx

 Greetings,
While a group of friends were visiting the father of another friend in a nursing home we met a young man, named Alan with MS. He seems so young to be in a nursing home, I'd say around 40, with all the other residents well past 60 and beyond. Alan is in a wheel chair and has limited use of one arm/hand. I only know a little about Alan's background but it seems he really doesn't have anyone to advocate for him. What resources are there for Alan? Where can we look? We are in western Kentucky. I do know he has been homeless in the past so outside of a teenage son, I don't think there is anyone else who visits, or looks after Alan. He is in dire need of friends. This nursing home is typical I'd say, under staffed, under financed, under furnished. As you may know, nursing homes can be very depressing places. Alan, at such a young age feels like he has no purpose, so wrestles with depression. Our small group of friends want to help Alan. He feels scared and hopeless. He is loosing the use of the one hand he can still use. What can we do?
Thanks You
KWAL

I had a baclofen pump implanted almost 2 years ago. It takes a while to ramp up the dosage, but it is one of the best things I have done to enhance my life with MS. I have always experience extreme neuropathic pain, so we have worked at finding the right drugs to add to my pump. Finally!! I am pain free. I have had no problems with the pump itself. The surgery is pretty simple, and recovery is short and not very painful. However, I did get a spinal headache which was the worst one ever. So, it you have this done, please remember to lie flat for absolutely as long as you can post sugery.
I am quite thin, so the pump is visible. That bothered me at first, but it is mostly easy to hide. I do consider it when I buy clothes.
My present intrathecal "cocktail" includes baclofen, bupivicaine, clonidine, and morphine. Tiny amounts are needed because it goes straight to the spinal cord. This really reduces side effects.
Good luck!

No one in the family has ever had it.
From an early age her one eye would blink more often. When she would sit and watch tv, she would make vocal sounds and twitch her head from straight up to one side. At times, she still does these things, but she is more aware of it now.
(The eye twitching is involuntary) I always suspected that she had a mild case of tourettes but she was never formally diagnosed...if there is such a thing! She also has a mild case of ADHD and can be obsessive about her decisions...making them or having made them.... also common in TSA.
Thank you for your input.
Beth

Anyone that is interested can shoot me an email.

Jim Ramstad did an outstanding job in congress. Hi Rick,
I think you already know me but I wanted to thank you for starting this discussion forum and once again say thank you for coming up with the "It's Only Breakfast" get togethers. I'm not sure I will be able to come to the next one (9/29 at Josephs) but you might want to let those in attendance know that the next Men's Retreat will be held February 8th - 10th 2008 at Arrowhead Resort in Alexandria. Information and the opportunity to sign up will come out after November 15th. I got this information from Tim Holtz. It might also be noted (I'm sure most have heard) that Represenative Jim Ramstad has announced his retirement from the U S Congress. I usually do not back Republicans but Jim was a great asset for the MS Society and in fact started an "MS Caucus" in the House of Representatives. That caucus has grown to 37 members and has been responsible for some good legislation about disabilities and money for the NIH>
